In order to encourage Jews to leave the confines of Jerusalem's Old City, Sir Moses Montefiore built apartments on the opposite hill. To provide work he imported a windmill with all its parts from England . At age 100 Montefiore was still visiting Palestine, always trying to improve the plight of Jews in the Holy Land. All this was at the end of the 19th century.

With the end of the War of Independence in 1949 this neighborhood found itself facing no man's land along the border of a divided city. Life was uncertain and conditions difficult.

By the end of the Six-Day War, Yemin Moshe became one of the sought after neighborhoods in the now united Jerusalem.

Today we can see the beautiful gardens and the gracious homes of its modern day residents.
